Current Highlighted TBI Survivor

Ella Merrill

Our first ever highlighted T.B.I. Survivor is Ella Merrill from Edwardsburg, MI. Ella was 16 years old when she collided with a school bus on an icy road December 13th, 2017. She unfortunately suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, and was in a coma from an intense neuro-shearing brain injury. Ella was transported to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, where she was treated under the supervision of Dr. Voss in the pICU.
At first Ella had autonomic dysfunctions, such as: uncontrolled breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. She suffered respiratory failure to a point where she was almost in a vegetative state, but luckily pulled through and beat the odds.
Ella woke up from her coma, and began relearning how to walk and talk. She has shown extraordinary improvement through her recovery and is recovering at an exponential rate. Ella was even able to get back into her passion for tennis and play members of her care team (including Dr. Voss) for a cherished prize of crispy bacon.
Ella has beat all of the odds against her and still continues on her upward trajectory of recovery. We would like to especially recognize Dr. Voss and Heather Zile (mother of Ella) for their tremendous support for Ella during her time in need. Ella is expected to recover much more and her future ahead of her is looking very bright.
